Places With Great Volunteering Opportunities When You're Traveling

Living the RV life definitely has its perks and is a fun way to live, but it’s important to remember that not everyone is as fortunate. While visiting new places and setting up camp for an extended stay, this is a great opportunity to donate your time and talents to those in need! Check out these places with great volunteering opportunities when you’re traveling so you can give back to the local community and turn your RVing adventure into one that helps others!

Animal Shelters, Food Pantries & Soup Kitchens

Your time at a local animal shelter, food pantry, or soup kitchen results in instant gratification by seeing the smiles on people's faces and the non-stop tail wagging on happy pups and kitties! Humans and animals alike will be grateful for your time helping to feed and clothe local animals or people in need. Since many organizations require you to complete a volunteer application before helping out, plan ahead by identifying possible opportunities before you leave for your getaway and call ahead, especially if you'd like your kids to help too.

Park/Beach Cleanup

If you live by the motto of “leave the area cleaner than you found it,” a simple cleanup effort could be perfect for you! This is a great family activity that doesn’t require any signups or work through a particular organization. Just visit a local park or beach with a few trash bags and pick up any waste that careless patrons have left behind. You could even work to clean up your campground by going on a family walk and picking up any trash you see.

Habitat for Humanity’s RV Care-A-Vanners

Help build a permanent family home for those in need while camping out in your RV with Habitat for Humanity’s RV Care-A-Vanners! What an awesome way to donate your time and skills! The program provides RVers with a campsite with electric hookups, access to water, a dump station, and oftentimes lunches are also included. You don’t need construction experience to make a difference here. There are several different positions for people of all skill sets to help out. Visit the Habitat for Humanity website for more information!

National Park Volunteering

Combine your love of adventure with your love of volunteerism by volunteering at a national park! This is an especially great opportunity if you’re passionate about nature and would like to help preserve America’s parks so that others can enjoy them too.
Many national parks feature campsite hosting positions, but there’s a little something for everyone with volunteer positions for photographers and other creative types, science-based programs, ranger assistant opportunities, and more! The National Park Service doesn’t let your donated efforts go unnoticed. Volunteers who have logged more than 250 volunteer hours in national parks or through the U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, or have volunteered with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers earn free entry into national parks! Read more about the programs here.

State Park Volunteer Programs

No matter which state you travel to, chances are that many state parks will have some form of volunteer program that you can participate in! A quick search can take you to a particular park’s main page and will probably have information about volunteer opportunities. For volunteer information for Michigan’s state parks, visit the Michigan DNR’s website!

Charity Organizations

If you plan on staying at a destination for an extended period of time, check major organizations like the Red Cross or United Way and see what kinds of volunteer opportunities are available in the area. Check your destination's chamber of commerce website to see if there are any local charities or organizations that could use your help! There are usually local schools, churches, or outreach programs that could use devoted volunteers like you! Even if you’d like to sign up for an occasional event, your time could make all the difference to someone in need!
